Smoothing out a parking lot on the WR&N IV Animation sometimes inspires itself; in this case, a GHQ compactor simply begged to be animated. The simple mechanism worked something like the drive rod of a steam locomotive: A low-RPM motor drove a crank that was connected to a pin in a slot via a connecting rod, translating rotational motion into linear motion. The pin extended up through the surface of the parking lot and engaged a short piece of brass tubing attached to the back of the compactor. A building in the foreground helped to hide the slot from view. Image specs: This is not a photograph but instead a frame grab from a Hi-8 camcorder tape.
