A Sea of Rusty Parts The visual effect I sought was inspired by real places, such as the Black River and Western Railroad engine facility in Ringoes, New Jersey, which are usually vast collections of parts of all sorts. I raided every parts and castings drawer that I had to surround the enginehouse with rusty junk. The smaller items in the lower right area of the photo came from Gold Medal Models steam loco detailing kits. After removing the parts from the frets, I placed them on newspaper and sprayed them with Rustoleum Ruddy Primer (this had to be done delicately as the tiny parts had a tendency to blow away). Then I applied my Supercrud technique: after dousing them with Rustall, I sprinkled them with chalk dust. When dry, I glued them to the scenery, one at a time, with thick CA.
