The WR&N IV's Oldest Structure This humble little crossing shanty was originally located on the WR&N Version I. This Bachmann pre-built structure received a new roof made from cardstock and hemming tape (a thin fabric tape used in sewing) that I cut with pinking shears to simulate shingles; a small brad became a smokestack. The photo below left shows how it appeared back in 1974. For reasons unknown, it wound up in a box of junk that was not discarded, and when I found it 25 years later, I decided to incorporate it into the WR&N IV. Since that layout was set in modern times, the shanty would not have been in use, so it was reworked to appear abandoned. The styrene glazing was scribed to simulate wood grain and painted with a plywood color to appear as if the windows were boarded up. The ladder and coal bin were removed, and a new roof was made from Ratio Models styrene roofing sheet. It was located just to the left of the farm, just out of sight in this view. Thus, another tiny scrap of "ancient" history was preserved. |
