The White River and Northern Model Railroad

A grand old lady

A grand old lady

Original imageWR&N's RS-1 #13 proves her worth as she continues running decades after most of her sisters were scrapped. She is swinging past the abandoned siding that once serviced an old quarry. One of the things that I am reminded of when studying this image is that Railcraft flex track is a sorely missed product—it is without doubt the best-looking commercial track ever made. Incidentally, it would seem WR&N RS-1s #12 and #13 came into the possession of Russ Wiegert from Connecticut.

Image specs: This is a 35mm Ektachrome 200 slide taken with a Canon TL and a 50mm lens modified with a 300 micron pinhole. Illumination consisted of a 500-watt daylight tungsten photoflood. Exposure was in the range of 30 seconds to a minute. The slide was digitized with a Konica/Minolta Dimage Scan Dual IV. Brightness, contrast, gamma, hue and saturation were adjusted for best appearance on the internet. The slide was shot on a portion of the layout still under construction—raw foamcore and nails were visible in the upper left corner, so I cropped the top of the image a little and digitally filled in the remaining hole with shrubbery.
