28 June 2011 This afternoon I spent an enjoyable hour on the phone with Joe Warren of Showcase Miniatures. Among other things, it was a thrill to learn that Wally's Filling Station is still available directly from the manufacturer. Often imitated but never bested, Wally's is one of my very favorite N Scale kits, loaded with character as well as potential for enhancement.
19 June 2011 Happy Father's Day! I celebrated by doing some N scale modeling, the first I've done in ages—much too long, as far as I'm concerned.
13 May 2011 Since tools and modeling tips are not scale-specific, I'm cross-pollinating my websites with links to resources such as an extensive clinic on Tools and Supplies for the Modeler's Workshop, as well as a growing collection of Totally Random Modeling Tips, both of which reside at my James River Branch website. 11 May 2011 My track planning work isn't all about designing HCD and other compact starter layouts; some challenges I face are quite substantial. Take for instance the Sunnyside Passenger Yard I adopted for a Railwire member: it was a seriously fun project, and I'm delighted to report that the results pleased the client no end. In his eyes, I'm now a Mensch—a sobriquet I don't take lightly. In other news, I'll occasionally receive requests from folks looking for camera recommendations. In my case, my needs are a bit outside those of the casual hobbyist, since I must shoot professional-grade images for business use. Nevertheless, I've assembled an inventory of my camera bag for those who may be curious. 9 May 2011 Yet another new plan for the collection: the Leesburg Branch, which is an adaptation of the Port of Tillamook Bay Railroad. It seems I need to focus a little more on these plans—they're getting over a hundred hits per day! Yeah, I didn't believe it at first, either. In other news, given that I'm confined to desk work for a good while, I went through my links resources pages, expanded them, and organized them better. More goodies are on the way as well. 1 May 2011 Dave Foxx was in one of those classic good-news-bad-news situations: he was finally able to sell his condo so he and his wife could consolidate their belongings in one townhouse. Unfortunately, owing to space constraints, this meant having to give up his Aberdeen & Rockfish HCD layout. But he wasn't giving up modeling! Meanwhile, by coincidence, I was also in a good-news-bad-news situation: having just torn up my knee pretty badly, I'm more or less confined to my desk. So, I had the time to give Dave a hand with a new, ultra-compact layout, the Aberdeen & Rockfish II, which is now already well under way. Stop back once in a while to watch his progress, which will be tracked on the new plan page. 7 April 2011 I've not completely forsaken N scale. I've been heavily involved in several custom track planning projects, including a few enormous multi-deck layouts. One of them has been in the works for several months—it's an intense, involved process. As these plans near completion, I'll publish them in my track plan library. Here's a sneak peek: Ridgeley Yard for Lee Weldon's Western Maryland Railway.
You can track Lee's progress on The Railwire. |
